Why does a carbon bike cost €3,000, €5,000 or even €10,000?
After all, it is still "just a bicycle", right?
The reality is that modern performance bicycles are far more complex than most people realize. What looks like a simple frame and a handful of components is actually the result of years of engineering, testing, manufacturing and assembly.
But complexity is only half the answer. The other half is the path your money travels before the bike reaches you, and almost nobody in this industry will explain it. We will, because we can.

The Frame Is Only Part of the Story
Many riders assume most of the cost comes from the frame itself.
While the frame is important, it is usually only one piece of a much larger puzzle.
A modern carbon bike consists of:
- Frame and fork
- Groupset
- Wheelset
- Cockpit
- Brakes
- Tires
- Assembly
- Shipping and logistics
- Warranty and support
Looking at the complete bike rather than a single component provides a much clearer picture of where the investment goes.
It is worth adding that the frame is also the part that lasts longest. As we explain in our guide to carbon frame lifespan, carbon does not fatigue the way metal does, so the frame is not the consumable part of the bike. Chains, cassettes, tyres and bearings are.
Carbon Manufacturing Is More Complex Than Aluminum
Carbon fiber is not expensive simply because of the material itself.
The real cost comes from how it is used.
Unlike aluminum frames, carbon frames are built by layering sheets of carbon fiber into carefully engineered molds.
Every layer must be positioned precisely to achieve the desired balance of:

One of the biggest surprises for new buyers is how much of a bike's value comes from its components.
Premium groupsets such as Shimano 105 Di2, Ultegra Di2 and SRAM Rival AXS represent a significant portion of the complete bike price.

These systems offer exceptional performance, but they are far more sophisticated than mechanical drivetrains from previous generations.

The Markup Chain: Where Your Money Actually Travels
This is the part that explains price differences better than any specification sheet.
A bicycle sold through traditional retail passes through several hands. Each one adds a margin, and each margin is calculated on the price it was bought at, not on the original factory cost. That compounding is the part people miss.
The path usually runs: factory, brand, importer or distributor, retailer, rider. Along the way it collects shipping, customs duty, warehousing, sales and marketing costs, and a margin at each stop.
The industry has a long-standing rule of thumb for the total effect. A bike that leaves the factory at a given price commonly reaches a recommended retail price of around three times that figure. The multiple covers duty, freight and every markup along the way. It is a rough guide rather than a law, and it varies by brand and volume, but it is the number people inside the trade use.
Margin and Markup Are Not the Same Thing
It is worth being precise here, because two words get confused constantly, and the confusion usually works in the seller's favour.
Margin is the share of the selling price that is above cost. Markup is the amount added on top of cost. A 33 percent margin is a 50 percent markup. They describe exactly the same transaction and sound very different.
For complete bikes, dealer margin typically sits around 30 to 35 percent. On components and accessories it is often far higher, with a doubling from wholesale to retail being common on small parts.
The Part That Is Not a Rip-Off
Here honesty matters more than a good line.
That retail margin is not profit. A well-run specialist bike shop spends most of it on the cost of operating: premises, staff, tools, training, holding stock through a seasonal trade, assembling and prepping bikes, and warranty and service work that generates no revenue. Published figures from shops willing to open their books put the cost of running the business at a similar level to the margin itself. The reason bike shops rarely discount complete bikes is not greed. It is that there is very little room.
We know this from the inside. IKUISTA was built on Emilia Sport, a Tampere bike shop trading since 1978. We have run that business. The work a good shop does is real, and it is undervalued.
So the honest framing is not that retailers take too much. It is that the chain itself is long, and every stage of it is charged to you.
What Direct Selling Removes, and What It Does Not
Selling directly removes the distributor stage and the retail stage. That is where the saving comes from. Nothing else about the bike changes.
What does not disappear is worth listing plainly, because a direct brand that pretends otherwise is selling you a story. Someone still has to assemble the bike, and we do that by hand in Tampere. Someone still has to answer the phone when something is wrong. Freight and duty still exist. Warranty still costs money. Stock still has to be bought and held.
What changes is that those costs are ours, and there is one margin instead of three.
There is also a genuine trade-off, and it is fair to name it. You do not get to walk into a shop, ride three sizes, and have a mechanic who knows your bike five minutes from your house. In exchange you get a lower price and direct contact with the people who built the bike. Which of those matters more depends on the rider. For some people a good local shop is worth the difference, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

A premium bike is not simply a box of premium parts.
Assembly quality affects:

Careful assembly, inspection and setup remain essential regardless of component quality.
Why Two Bikes with Similar Specifications Can Have Different Prices
Comparing specifications alone rarely tells the full story.
Two bikes may both feature:
- Carbon frames
- Electronic shifting
- Hydraulic disc brakes
- Carbon wheels
Yet differences in frame design, manufacturing quality, wheel quality, assembly standards, brand strategy and the length of the sales chain can still create significant price differences.
This is why evaluating overall value is often more useful than comparing specifications line by line.
What to Ask Before You Buy Any Bike

What exactly is in the build? Frame, groupset, wheels and finishing kit each have a real cost, and vague spec sheets hide substitutions.
Are the components standard? Proprietary parts can lock you into one supplier for the life of the bike, and that cost lands years after the purchase. Every part on our bikes is standard, serviceable at any well-stocked bike shop in Europe.
What does service cost over five years? A cheap bike with unusual standards can cost more to own than a more expensive one with common parts.

For many riders, yes.
A modern carbon bike offers a combination of:
- Low weight
- Efficient power transfer
- Ride quality
- Performance
- Long-term durability
But the right bike depends on your goals, budget and riding style.

Final Thoughts
Carbon bikes are expensive for the same reason many premium products are expensive. The cost is driven by engineering, manufacturing, components, assembly and support working together.
But part of the price is not the bike at all. It is the distance between the factory and you.
The thing worth questioning in this industry is not any one shop or brand. It is the unexplained gap between what a bike costs to make and what it costs to buy, and the fact that so few companies will discuss it at all.
