Most cycling advice is written for mild climates. It assumes rain is the worst thing that happens to a bike. In Finland the season runs from thawing salt slush to weeks below minus twenty, with daylight that disappears for months. That environment breaks equipment in ways that nothing in a British or Californian maintenance guide covers.
We assemble and service bikes in Tampere, and the shop this company was built on has been repairing bikes here since 1978. This guide is what that experience teaches.

Salt is the real enemy, not cold
Riders worry about the cold. The cold is survivable. Salt is what destroys equipment.
Road salt keeps working as a corrosive long after the road has dried. It clings to the underside of the frame, sits inside the bottom bracket shell, works into cable housings, and settles on chains and cassettes. Water alone causes surface rust slowly. Salt water accelerates it, and it keeps drawing moisture out of the air even after the bike looks dry in a warm garage.
It is also why winter matters more for carbon frames than most people realise. Carbon itself does not corrode, as we explain in our guide to carbon frame lifespan. But wherever a metal part meets carbon, and that interface is not sealed and clean, galvanic corrosion can begin, and salted winter roads make it far more likely. That is a specific, physical reason to clean a bike after a salted ride, not general advice.
The practical rule is that after any ride on salted roads, the bike gets rinsed with clean water. Not a pressure washer, which forces water past seals and into bearings. A gentle rinse, then dry, then relubricate the chain. It takes a few minutes and it is the single highest-value maintenance habit in a Nordic winter.
What actually changes below freezing
Lubricants thicken. A wet lube that works in autumn becomes noticeably draggy at low temperatures. In deep cold, thinner low-temperature lubricants stay more usable, though they need more frequent reapplication in slush.
Tyre pressure drops. Air contracts as it cools, roughly 2.5 psi for every 10 degrees Celsius. Set a tyre indoors at 20 degrees and ride out at minus 10, and you have lost meaningful pressure before you have turned a pedal. Batteries fade. Electronic shifting and lights both lose usable capacity in cold. Battery life you rely on in summer is not the battery life you have in February. Charge more often and carry a backup light.
Seals stiffen and clearances change. Cold makes elastomers harder, so bearing seals and suspension parts behave differently. It is one reason a bike that felt smooth in October feels notably worse in January even when nothing is broken.
Condensation is the hidden one. Bringing a frozen bike into a warm room causes moisture to condense on and inside the frame, including in places you cannot see. That is a reason to dry the bike properly indoors rather than simply parking it.
Darkness is a design constraint, not an accessory question
For a large part of the Finnish year, most riding happens in the dark. That changes what the bike needs.
Lighting is not an add-on, it is part of the bike. Plan for a front light with genuine road-illuminating output rather than a be-seen light, a rear light, and a backup for both, given what cold does to run times.
Reflective surfaces matter more than bright clothing. Reflective material on ankles and feet, where the motion is, is far more visible to drivers than a static reflective panel on your back.
Visibility also changes your line and pace. Ice, potholes, and debris are much harder to read at night, which is an argument for wider tyres at lower pressure and for a less aggressive position that lets you look further ahead.
What to do with a good bike in winter
There are two honest approaches and they suit different people.
Ride it, and maintain it properly. A carbon frame is not damaged by cold, and there is no reason a performance bike cannot be used year round if it is rinsed after salted rides, dried, and serviced more often. Expect to replace chains and cassettes more frequently, because grit and salt accelerate wear far more than distance does. Measure chain wear more often in winter than in summer.
Or keep a winter bike, and let the good one wait. This is a common approach and there is nothing wrong with it. It concentrates the wear on cheaper equipment.
If you choose to store a bike for the winter, do it properly. Clean it first so salt is not left sitting on it for months, store it indoors and dry, away from direct sunlight, and inflate the tyres. A bike stored dirty in an unheated shed comes out worse than one ridden all winter and cleaned each time.
Why standard parts matter more in February
Here is a point specific to this climate. Winter breaks things, and it breaks them at inconvenient times. A worn cassette, a seized cable, a failed bearing, or a cracked light mount is far more likely in January than in July.
If your bike uses standard, non-proprietary components, a replacement is available from any well-stocked bike shop in Europe, often the same day. If it uses proprietary parts, you wait for a supplier, in the middle of the season when you most want to be riding. That is the practical argument for standard components, and it becomes obvious the first time something fails in the cold.
